UCSC Extension offers two types of distance learning courses
- ONLINE: All instruction takes place through the Internet
- HYBRID: A combination of online instruction and classroom-based courses
Please check the METHOD OF INSTRUCTION for each course to identify into which category they fall.
Here's what to expect:
- Each course has a fixed start date and end date
- Once you enroll, you'll be e-mailed an account and a password to log on and access your course
- Some courses are a combination of online and instructor-led classroom meetings--these hybrid courses offer the personal touch of the classroom with the flexibility of online instructional delivery
- Assignments, exams, and projects are due on designated dates
- Upon completion of the course, a grade will be awarded--just like any Extension course
Here's what you'll need
- Access to the Internet
- To get the most out of your online learning experience, you should have substantial experience in using the computer and be experienced in navigating the Internet
- For some IT courses, it is helpful if you have access to a PC where additional software can be installed to enhance your learning experience
- For courses that cover routers, switches, UNIX, and Solaris, and for some lab exercises, students can Telnet over the Internet to execute commands and course assignments
- For courses on such topics as Java, Windows 2003 Server, Linux, Solaris, ISA Firewall, and SQL Server 2000, free software is available over the Internet to practice commands and participate in course activities. While instructors are not available 24/7, UCSC Extension employs various instructional techniques and technological tools to make your online learning experience successful.
- Instructor support will be available via chat server or e-mail
- Generally, the instructor will answer questions twice a week
