Course Description:
Biopharmaceutical products based on recombinant proteins differ from small molecule drugs and other biologics in fundamental ways. This comprehensive course explores the scientific, clinical, manufacturing, regulatory, business and legal issues central to the discovery, development, and commercialization of recombinant protein-based biopharmaceuticals. An array of product classes, including growth and coagulation factors, interferons, hormones, therapeutic enzymes, antibodies, and structural proteins are discussed in terms of their biochemical characteristics, pharmacological properties, the technologies that underlie their production, and their commercialization. The development of biogenerics and the roles of gene/cell therapy, xenotransplantation, and pharmacogenomics in the future of the industry are also addressed. Finally, the interactions of technology, medical needs, government, and society are examined as they uniquely come together in the commercialization of biopharmaceuticals and in the evolution of the biopharmaceutical industry.
Topics Include:
The course is organized into three sections:
- Biopharmaceuticals as major force shaping the biotechnology industry
- Top 20 Biopharmaceuticals
- Monoclonal antibodies, cytokine, hormones and therapeutic enzymes revolutionizing the practice of medicine
In each section, biopharmaceuticals are discussed in several contexts--- the industry, technology, and medical use---to allow participants to explore the relationships among the products, challenges to their commercialization and the opportunities to develop new medical products.
Prerequisite(s):
General science background and understanding of biochemical concepts are essential. "Molecular Biology, Introduction " or equivalent course work is required.
Applies Towards the Following Certificate(s) & Award(s):
