Program Overview
Reports frequently tout the enormous economic potential of the bioscience industry in the Bay Area and beyond. However, lengthy development timelines and unique financial, legal, regulatory, social, and political challenges impose constraints that impact every aspect of the business. Novel business approaches, well-informed analyses of business opportunities, and sound risk-management strategies are critical in this dynamic industry. Bioscience leaders and innovators need to be fluent in the new technologies and understand how they impact traditional business models.
This program is designed to help individuals, from within and outside the bioscience sector, rapidly gain the knowledge, skills, and insight necessary to understand and work effectively in this growing, highly competitive, and global industry.
Certificate Requirements
To satisfy the requirements of the Certificate in Bioscience Business and Marketing, participants must complete the four required courses and a minimum of 3 units (30 hours) of elective course work. In order to be eligible for this certificate, you must complete all course work within three years of filing the application to establish candidacy, and (2) achieve an overall 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for all required and elective courses. In addition, all courses applying toward the certificate must have been successfully completed within five years of the date on which the certificate is issued. Please see www.ucsc-extension.edu/gpa for GPA calculator. Students who complete a certificate program with a GPA of 4.0 will earn a Certificate with Honors.
Students pursuing the Bioscience Business and Marketing and Biotechnology or Clinical Trials Design and Management certificates need a minimum of 27 units, including all required courses and elective units for both programs. Please note that in order to complete two certificate programs with the minimum number of units, students must select some electives that are common to both programs. Please contact the Applied and Natural Sciences Department if you would like assistance creating a study plan.
Courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program.
Prerequisites
Given the scientific foundations of the bioscience industry and the value it places on the scientific and technical literacy of its employees, it is strongly recommended that individuals without a background in the life sciences (or who have not taken a course in the past five years) take a basic science course early in their studies. "Biology, An Introduction" or "Molecular Biology, Introduction" can be used to satisfy 1.5 elective units in this program.
Recommended Course Sequence
We suggest that those individuals without a background of recent work or study in the life sciences take the "Drug Development Process" and "Bioscience Business and Marketing Essentials" courses early in the certificate program. After that, you may take courses in any sequence, unless otherwise specified. Those not enrolled in the certificate program may take the courses individually.
Required Courses (Four):
- Drug Development Process (2 units) OR Biopharmaceuticals, Understanding (2 units)
- Bioscience Business and Marketing Essentials (1.5 units)
- Bioscience Product Marketing (2 units)
- Bioscience Business Development: Building Value (1.5 units)
Elective Courses can be selected from the following Biotechnology Courses (a minimum of 3 units required):
- Biopharmaceutical Project Management (1.5 units)
- Drug Development: Formulation Design, Manufacture and Control (1.5 units)
- Gene Expression and Pathways (2 units)
- Global Medical Device Regulations and Strategy (1.5 units)
- Intellectual Property Essentials for the Life Science Industry (1 unit)
- Medical Device Design and Development (2 units)
- Medical Devices: Regulatory Strategies and Marketing Pathways (1.5 units)
- Molecular Biology, Introduction (1.5 units toward elective)
- Molecular Diagnostics (1.5 units)
- Regulation of Biomedical Product Advertising, Promotion and Labeling (1.5 units)
- Stem Cell Biology (1.5 units)
- Viruses, Vaccines and Gene Therapy (1.5 units)
Certificate Application Information
We encourage you to establish candidacy in a certificate program early in your studies. Curriculum changes subsequent to the date your application is received will not affect your course requirements. Candidates will be notified of updates or special opportunities related to the program. Certificate Applications can be submitted through our online form or using our PDF form . If you use our PDF form, please submit your application along with the appropriate fee to the address or fax number listed on the application form.

Transferring Credit From Other Schools
Subject to departmental approval, students may substitute one equivalent course from another institution for one in the certificate program. The course must have been taken within the past five years with a grade of C or better, cover the same material as the required course, carry equivalent or more credit, and be from an accredited academic institution.
To be considered, download a " Substitution Request Form " and send your request along with a course outline and description, and transcript to:
